Stephen Burrows paving the way



Stephen Burrows a fashion designer that has done so much for the industry. What is also significant about this designer is that he is the first African American fashion designer to make international acclaim. This is important because African Americans do not get a lot of credit in the fashion industry, especially internationally. He is one of the African American designers that has made his own name by putting in his own work. Stephen Burrows has laid a foundation for many others to follow. His line is one of the signatures of American fashion today. Stephen Burrows who has made clothes for Oprah, Naomi Watts, Aretha Franklin has produced clothes that is timeless. He has won awards that include: Coty American Fashion Critics special award (lingerie), 1974; "Winnie," 1977; Council of American Fashion Critics award, 1975; Knitted Textile Association Crystal Ball award, 1975. Mr. Burrows is originally from Philadelphia went to school at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. He had an exhibition in Versailles Palace in 1973. Stephen Burrows contribution helped designers such as Tracy Reese and Patrick Robinson. Truly an inspiration and a part of great fashion history.
